Department of Accounting, University of Sri Jayewardenepura has laughed the new project call Techno-Economic-Societal Sustainable Development Training in Sri Lanka (TESS)

 

Managing waste is challenging for all countries, but Sri Lanka encounters specific challenges. Higher educational institutions could play a leading role in addressing some of the waste management challenges. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is part of an international consortium under the rubric of Techno-Economic-Societal Sustainable Development Training in Sri Lanka (TESS), co-financed by the European Union through its Erasmus + Capacity Building in Higher Education program. The consortium is made of four European Universities (i.e. University of South-Eastern Norway, University of Nova De Lisboa & University of Essex) and Five Sri Lankan universities (i.e. University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Vocational Technology, University of Moratuwa, University of Jaffna & University of Ruhuna), including a not-for-profit organisation (i.e. Janthakshan GTE).



The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, together with the University of South-Eastern Norway and the University of Vocational Technology, hosted a Training Workshop on Waste Management & Circular Economy as part of the TESS Project at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 27th to 31st March 2023. TESS projects members from the University of Ruhuna and the University of Vocational Technology participated in the workshop.

Several lectures were delivered by European resource persons in addition to vising institutions involved in managing wastes in the Western Province.

Professor Chamara Kuruppu, University of South-Eastern Norway, conducted a session about the TESS project and waste management education for Attaining SDGs. Professor Umar Burki, University of South-Eastern Norway, conducted seminars about the Morality & Waste Management Behaviour and Managing Waste from the business perspective.

Professor Jarle Sorensen, University of South-Eastern Norway, shared his experience of organising for Emergency Management: the emergency management cycle and Dr Debashree De, University of Essex, discussed Improving the Circular Economy of Municipalities by Reduction of Single-Use Plastics and the Circular Economy Approach of Food Loss & Waste in Food Supply Chain. Professor Seyed Soheil Mansouri, Technical University of Denmark, discussed the Sustainability, Tools & Methods for Environmental & Economically Robust Process Development.

On 27th all participants visited Moratuwa Municipal Council’s Solid Waste Management site and Karadiyana Waste Management Centre.
